I stand vigil until I know she is sleeping soundly then slip out to speak with my clade. They are thrilled that I have been formally selected for mating by our new queen and most interested in this ritual acceptance by licking.

“It is not unpleasant.” When they don’t respond, I add, “I found it to be quite enjoyable.”

“Humans have strange customs but I must admit this one piques my interest.”

Hatch’s response means he’s open to exploring human customs and that eases my mind. “I felt certain you would all comply with our new queen’s demands. Unfortunately, she is not like the queens we have known. She rarely makes her wishes known verbally and usually phrases them as a question or request. It was difficult to acclimate to at first.”

Kane interjects, “Human queens are less demanding by nature than Draconian queens. The breeders learned rather quickly to pay attention to their facial expressions and body language. They wear their feelings for all to see.”

Jax chuckles as he joins the conversation for the first time. “I have helped care for them over the last few lunars. I do not believe I’ve seen even one of them wear the neutral expression of a warrior.”

Warriors are taught from an early age to maintain a blank expression, no matter the circumstances. Jax is correct in pointing out that human females’ faces are very expressive. “The greater issue for me has been her expression and mood shifting so quickly that I have a difficult time keeping up.”

“Being mated to a human queen will be a challenge in many ways. However, there are many rewards to be earned if we are diligent and act with honor.”

Jax teases, “Perhaps we will earn names of honor. I for one would love for our queen to look to me in her time of need the way she does her Hero.”

Kane nods. “Her easy acceptance of Hero has sealed the deal for me. If the option is still open, I wish to join your clan.”

Hatch’s hand goes out to rest on his shoulder. “Welcome to the House of Citron. With a queen maker among our ranks we can be assured of having an abundance of young.”

I quickly point out, “That will only be true if she accepts Kane into our clan and if she considers him worthy to breed. Also, I do not believe there is a House of Citron anymore. If there is, it will shortly be dissolved in favor of a new clan.”

Hatch and Kane’s heads snap around to stare at me so quickly I worry that I have offended. I explain before they become even more annoyed. “Queen Latisha wishes to establish a clan of her own rather than join with our clan.” Their wings jerk in astonishment, much as mine did when she told me her wishes. Swallowing thickly, I continue. “Queen Latisha informed me that I am chosen and that no other female may touch what is hers. She also wishes me to communicate to you that she is on the lookout for clan members and wishes to interview you all before any others.
